Description
Ceramic media for rock tumbling
Ceramic media is a practical aid for tumbling and polishing stones. The small ceramic rods fill the open spaces between the stones and help ensure that the contents of the barrel move evenly.
Ceramic media is especially useful when you do not have enough stones to fill the barrel properly, or when the stones become smaller during the grinding process.
Why use ceramic media?
A rock tumbler works best when the barrel is filled sufficiently. When there is too much empty space, stones can knock against each other and against the barrel wall too hard.
Ceramic media helps to:
- fill empty space in the barrel;
- make the movement of the stones more even;
- improve contact between grit, water and stones;
- support stones during finer grinding and polishing stages;
- maintain the fill level as the stones become smaller during grinding.
The ceramic media consists of small cylindrical rods with bevelled ends. This allows the pieces to fit easily between the stones.
From which stage should you use ceramic media?
Ceramic media can be used from the first coarse grinding stage if the barrel would otherwise be insufficiently filled.
With a well-filled barrel containing sturdy rough stones, only a small amount of extra media is usually needed in the first stage. As the stones become smaller, you can add more ceramic media in the following stages to maintain the desired fill level.
Ceramic media is especially useful during the finer grinding and polishing stages.
How much ceramic media do you need?
There is no fixed amount that is the same for every barrel. First fill the barrel with stones, then add as much ceramic media as needed to achieve a good fill level and even movement.
For many small hobby rock tumblers, one 360 ml tub is enough to support multiple batches.
Reusable
The ceramic media can be used several times. Rinse the media thoroughly after each stage before moving on to a finer grit. This reduces the chance of coarser abrasive particles being carried over to the next stage.
It is best to use new ceramic media first in a coarse or medium-coarse grinding stage before using it in the final polishing stage.
Contents and specifications
- 1 tub of ceramic media
- Contents: approx. 360 ml
- Weight: approximately 600 grams
- Material: ceramic
- Shape: small cylindrical rods with bevelled ends
- Reusable: yes
- Suitable for: rotary rock tumblers and similar polishing barrels
Because the ceramic media is packed by volume, the exact weight per tub may vary slightly.
Handy for almost any rock tumbler
After each grinding stage, the stones lose material and the total volume in the barrel decreases. With ceramic media, you can easily make up that lost volume again without having to add extra rough stones every time.
