Description
Rough carnelian from Java, Indonesia, consists of uncut pieces in warm orange, orange-red and reddish-brown shades. The natural shapes and colour variations make this lot suitable for collectors, creative lapidary workers and hobbyists who want to grind or polish the stone themselves.
Rough Carnelian – properties
* Preliminary indication based on supplier information and the sample batch. Natural stone is not a made-to-measure product: shape, colour, matrix and size may vary between deliveries and between individual pieces.
What is carnelian?
Carnelian belongs to the chalcedony family and consists mainly of microcrystalline quartz. Some pieces may show agate-like structures or colour banding. In its rough state, the outside is often more matte than after grinding or polishing.
Rough stones for collecting and lapidary work
Carnelian can be used as a rough collector’s stone, for decorative applications and for further processing into polished stones or other lapidary projects. With a hardness of around 6.5–7 Mohs, it is also a classic material for barrel tumbling.
Rough carnelian in a rock tumbler
Rock tumbling is one possible use for this rough stone. Always choose a method that suits the hardness, fracture sensitivity and size of the material. Carnelian typically works well with agate, jasper and other quartz material of similar hardness.
