Description
TRM-1A: a premium German rock tumbler with a single barrel
The TRM-1A rock tumbler is intended for people who want to start with one batch of stones at a time, but who do not want to settle for a lightweight plastic hobby machine. You get a solid rock tumbler made in Germany with a full steel machine housing, a white rubber barrel and a simple mechanical drive designed for long-term use.
The TRM-1A is produced by Homberg + Brusius, a specialist German manufacturer from the gemstone region around Idar-Oberstein. The machine has been designed with a traditional, practical approach: no unnecessary digital programmes, no fragile display and no plastic outer casing, but a strong machine that can keep running reliably throughout a complete grinding and polishing process.
In our opinion, the TRM-1A is the highest-quality expandable single-barrel rock tumbler you can buy in the Netherlands. The combination of German engineering, a steel construction, a full rubber barrel and the option to add a second barrel later makes it unique in its class.
Rocktumbler.nl is the exclusive distributor of the TRM-1A in the Netherlands. That makes this superior German rock tumbler available through a specialist Dutch supplier.
No stripped-down machine, but the same base as the TRM-2A
The TRM-1A should not be seen as a simple or lower-grade version of the dual TRM-2A. Both models use the same long and robust machine housing. The TRM-1A comes with one barrel as standard, and the space for a second barrel remains free for now.
So you are not first buying a small machine that will later have to be replaced entirely. You are investing directly in the same high-quality German machine base on which the dual version is also built. If you later find that you want to tumble more often or process multiple batches at once, you can add a second barrel.
That makes the TRM-1A a particularly sensible choice for beginners who want to buy quality straight away. You keep the initial purchase manageable, but avoid needing a completely new rock tumbler again after a short time.
Ideal for one carefully prepared batch of stones
The TRM-1A comes with one white rubber barrel with a capacity of 0.7 litres. At the recommended three-quarter fill, the barrel is suitable for approximately 850 grams of stones.
That is a practical amount for a serious batch without immediately needing large quantities of rough stones, grinding powder and polishing media. The TRM-1A is therefore suitable for, among others:
Because you work with one barrel, you can focus entirely on one stone type and one grinding stage. This makes the process clear and reduces the chance that different grinding powders, stone types or hardness levels are accidentally mixed together.
White rubber barrel with a wavy inner profile
The TRM-1A is fitted with a high-quality white rubber barrel. Rubber dampens the sound of the rolling stones much better than a hard plastic barrel. This prevents the sharp, hollow rattling often heard with basic plastic machines.
The manufacturer quotes a noise level of around 52 dB for the machine. The movement of the stones is, of course, still audible, but the rubber creates a much calmer and more muted sound. Because every rock tumbler runs for several days in a row, we do recommend placing the machine in a separate workspace, garage, storage room or shed.
The white colour of the barrel also offers a practical advantage. Black rubber can leave dark marks or rubber residue in some applications. With the white barrel, materials can therefore also be processed where black transfer is undesirable, such as light-coloured stones, metal parts and certain jewellery components.
The inside of the barrel has a distinct wavy profile. This helps lift the stones as they rotate and lets them roll over one another again. That creates the motion that wears away sharp edges and gradually smooths rough stone surfaces.
Designed for long-term continuous use
Grinding and polishing stones takes time. A complete process usually consists of several consecutive stages and takes around four weeks, depending on the hardness and original shape of the stones.
A rock tumbler typically runs day and night during each grinding stage. Reliability is therefore much more important than complicated programmes, lighting or digital timers. The TRM-1A has been specially developed for this long-term continuous use.
The full steel machine housing gives the machine stability. The simple on/off switch and mechanical drive prevent the process from depending on complicated electronics. This is a practical machine built to do its job.
Easy to expand later with a second barrel
One of the TRM-1A’s main advantages is the option to add a second barrel later. The machine housing has already been prepared for this. The space next to the supplied barrel simply remains free at first.
After expansion, for example, you can:
The TRM-1A therefore grows with your hobby. You can start calmly with one barrel and only later decide whether you really need the extra capacity.
Why not choose a cheap beginner machine straight away?
Cheap rock tumblers can seem attractive when you want to polish stones for the first time. Many of these machines, however, have a plastic housing, a small or hard barrel and electronic controls designed mainly for short-term hobby use.
The TRM-1A clearly takes a different approach. The machine has a steel construction, a rubber barrel and simple mechanical controls. You are not paying for digital frills, but for the parts that really matter in a process lasting several weeks.
That makes the TRM-1A not the cheapest way to start stone polishing, but it is a much more durable and serious choice. You are buying a fully fledged machine straight away rather than a temporary entry-level model.
Stated power consumption of 32 watts
Homberg + Brusius states a power consumption of 32 watts for the complete machine. The TRM-1A uses the same machine base and drive as the TRM-2A. The lower number of barrels therefore does not mean a smaller motor or a different stated power rating is used.
Actual power consumption may vary somewhat in practice due to barrel load, mechanical resistance and mains voltage. For that reason, we state 32 watts explicitly as the official factory specification and not as a guaranteed exact consumption at every moment.
Which stones can you polish with the TRM-1A?
The TRM-1A can be used for many types of rough tumbling stones and suitable natural pebbles. Examples include:
For the best results, process only stones of roughly the same hardness in one batch. When very hard and soft stones are tumbled together, the softer pieces can be damaged while the harder stones are still not sufficiently worn down.
Also pay attention to size. A good batch preferably contains stones of different sizes, so that the spaces between the larger stones are filled and an even grinding action is created.
The four stages of grinding and polishing stones
A complete process usually consists of four successive stages:
After each stage, the stones, barrel, lid rim and any tools used must be cleaned very carefully. Any remaining coarse grit can cause scratches again in the next stage.
As stones are ground, they lose material and become smaller. As a result, the fill level in the barrel can decrease. If necessary, use suitable ceramic or plastic filler media to keep the barrel properly filled and protect the stones as they rotate.
Technical specifications of the TRM-1A
What is included?
Please note: stones, grit, polishing powder and filler media are not included as standard with the separate machine, unless explicitly stated with the chosen version or bundle.
Choose the TRM-1A or TRM-2A?
The TRM-1A is the best choice if you initially want to process one batch of stones at a time and keep the investment slightly lower. You still get the same high-quality German machine base straight away and retain the option to add a second barrel later.
The TRM-2A is more suitable if you want to run two batches or different grinding stages at the same time from the outset. Because a complete grinding process takes several weeks, the second barrel offers a great deal of extra flexibility, especially with regular use.
If you are still unsure whether you really need two barrels, the TRM-1A offers the safest middle ground: you start with one barrel without limiting yourself for the future.
