The National Geographic Hobby Rock Tumbler Kit is a well-known starter set that lets you grind and polish rough stones yourself. The set is aimed mainly at people who want an accessible introduction to rock tumbling, and in addition to the machine it also includes stones, grinding media and a few accessories.

What is included in the National Geographic Hobby Rock Tumbler Kit?

That makes it a fun way to get acquainted with grinding and polishing stones. Do keep in mind, however, that a complete tumbling process takes several weeks and that the machine runs for several consecutive days during each grinding stage.
National Geographic or a solid hobby tumbler?
A complete beginner set like the one from National Geographic has the advantage that almost everything you need to get started is included straight away. However, if you want to polish stones more often, other factors become more important: the quality of the barrel, the drive, the noise level and the availability of spare parts.
That is why, for regular home use, we prefer a traditional stone polishing machine with a rubber barrel, such as the Lortone 3A or the German TRM-1A.
