Description
Rough snowflake obsidian from Java, Indonesia, is black volcanic glass with characteristic grey-white spots and patterns. These natural, uncut pieces are attractive as collector’s material and can also be further cut or polished.
Rough snowflake obsidian – properties
* Preliminary indication based on supplier information and the sample batch. Natural stone is not a made-to-measure product: shape, colour, matrix and size may vary from shipment to shipment and from piece to piece.
What is snowflake obsidian?
Snowflake obsidian forms from rapidly cooled volcanic material. The light-coloured ‘snowflakes’ are crystalline structures in the dark glass. Because obsidian fractures in a glass-like way, sharp edges and natural fracture surfaces may be present.
Rough stones for collecting and lapidary work
Use the stones for a mineral collection, decorative projects, grinding and polishing, or other lapidary work. At around 5–5.5 Mohs, obsidian is softer and more brittle than quartz or jasper; therefore, work with more cushioning and less impact.
Rough snowflake obsidian in a rock tumbler
Rock tumbling is one of the possible uses for this rough stone. Always choose a method that suits the hardness, fracture tendency and size of the material. Use plenty of cushioning and avoid a batch with many harder quartz stones; otherwise the obsidian may chip.
Origin: Java, Indonesia
This batch comes from Java, Indonesia. We specify the origin as precisely as possible because the source locality is relevant product information for rough minerals and rocks. The photo shows a sample batch; you will receive similar natural material, not the exact stones shown.
What will you receive?
- A bag with approximately 1 kg of rough, uncut stones.
- Natural material with variations in colour, shape, matrix and fracture surfaces.
- A batch that may be suitable for collecting, decorative use and/or further lapidary work.
- Rough stones may contain dust or soil; this is normal for unprocessed natural material and can be removed with water.
